Shoe Shine Sunday – Chat with Alex Petrossian | Kirby Allison

Hi, I’m Kirby Allison. I’m thrilled to be
here in New York City with my good Friend Alex Petrossian. We’ve set up a
little bit of a shoeshine table today. He’s a one of my fellow shoe lovers and
we kind of share the same passion for Shoes and for shoe shining and for you
know all things just to find an elegant And so we’re enjoying a little bit of
champagne we’ve got some Saphir shoe Polish and we’ve got some shoes that
we’re gonna shine together. Exactly Exactly. The only thing that’s missing is
the cigar which we’re not allowed to Smoke given New York City regulations so
we’re doing our next best thing which is Some nice champagne we’ve got actually
this is a leftover bottle that we were Drinking during our caviar series of the
lagron dom 2006 Brut vintage champagne So thank you for all your generosity. – Good champagne good friends that’s all you need. So Alex and I actually met out of a random
coincidence Of just shared passions you know he as
you know is of the Petrossian family and He runs Petrossian caviar in the United
States for his family and you know Caviar is one of my favorite gifts to
give I mean it’s like my gift it’s my Signature now and so of course I was
familiar with Petrossian and then Alex Unbeknownst to me is a huge shoe lover
that has been a shoe lover really his Entire adult life and so one day yet I’m
sitting there in my office I still remember This like it’s yesterday you know
flipping through my orders and I see you Know a pretty large order come through
with overnight shipping to New York City From an Alex Petrossian and I said what are the chances I said there’s no way that
there’s another Petrossian, yeah. The one who Who overnights shoe polish and so I said well I’m gonna just I’m gonna write him a Note and tell him how much I love is his
caviar and appreciate giving those gifts And so I sent that with a few surprises
and then look your website actually Spoke. I think that you didn’t even
respond, you just, you even better you Sent some things back to me. Oh yeah yeah yeah With a similar note and then we connected and then we connected and you know I Mean we share of course a shared passion
of shoes and just shoe care but you know Cigars, we’ve got young children
who same age yeah yeah I think we’re Passionate about good things there were
beautiful beautiful and good things you Know good shoes a good shine a good
polish good brush with the hangers Craftsmanship and you know what are they
the you know the French and the save our Favor. Yeah no I pronounce that correctly I’m

what is it the c’est la vie yeah Yeah yeah good life and I think you know
the the best thing about loving shoes is To love it’s to love how to to learn how
to take care absolutely because you know Let’s face it you know beautiful shoes
are in investment and you should take Care of this investment as best as
possible They are there well and I think also I
mean you know you’ve invested in shoes But a great pair of shoes should last
and evolve and I think one of the things About shoe care that I particularly
enjoy is just seeing a pair of shoes evolve Right I mean the patina changes you know
maybe you know you’re shining it Differently it’s you know in and out of
high shine not high shine and you know Just the ritual of sitting down and
taking care of something another that is Is savoring uh relaxes me I read it does
you know I sit down a nice drink you Know that’s the way that’s the way I
relax yeah so so let’s look at as what We what we have here so we’ve got two
shoes will let you reveal first so I Have some beautiful velvetty shoes that
my godmother Olga Did for me for my wedding actually
really? – uhm she so you walked on the Elements I did actually
and they she used Ray skin for this point Here and care for here what type of skin
is stingray yeah stingray yes thing Right okay she removed all the balm to make
it super simple super light leather and They all my is like cascading it really
does and they are by far my most Comfortable shoes it’s it’s they did
great they really great really great So one of the I just kind of random
facts is Olga Berluti is in fact your Godmother. She is the my father in her or
great friends. — Your father’s a shoe lover Also an Italian man that that’s how
they met and my dad was going to do Open his store in Paris that’s how he met
Olga and no guy is such a passionate Person about shoes that you know you
have to love you know hearing her Talking about it my father gave me my
first pair Of his when I was 16 and he gave me one of his old pair of Berluti and you know I Love you know to see how I could take
care of it they were a little beat up they Were a little used you know they were
you know 15 years old and you know I Learned that’s how I learned how to take
care of them I wanted to look I want Them to look great still keep the patina
that was going on and that’s really how I learned so I’d ask Olga to teach me
how to take care of it properly and she Did and you know I kind of evolved
around it afterwards using different

Type of project different thing the kind
of things and I think that’s where you Make your this experience you own it’s
when you know you start playing with the Product see how they react
see how they use and that’s really how I Discovered the the Nappa cream I used to
use the renovateur for everything But now I know the Nappa I think just
nourish the leather better but the Nappa Is is you know really one of the most
unique products from Saphir in that it is Just the conditioner there’s no waxes So it’s jojoba oil and I think I
think some whey protein it nourishes the Leather but it doesn’t change the
texture and it won’t change the color Right it won’t actually pull any of the old
pigment object like the Renovateur will Pull some of it off the Nappa doesn’t
this is a tale of two totally different Shoes similar black cap toe Oxford right
these are a pair of my bespoke GJ Cleverly or George Cleverly shoes and of
this is you know just it wasn’t my first Pair actually you know my first pair I
gravitated towards burgundy hole cut Which this probably should have been my
first pair but this is a nice touch Of thing yeah the embossed I mean just
every aspect of just the process of Having them made and the personalization
and you know I always say that if Someone was to have one
folks you it should be a black cap toe Oxford yeah you could wear to your
wedding I wasn’t fortunate to be released my
wedding but my first bespoke suit was in Fact my wedding yeah the bespoke tuxedo
but it’s versatile it is very good I Love these shoes in the down dress them you
can yeah wear my jeans yeah I love Wearing like you know there’s a reason
Black has a reputation being classic is Because black never looks bad and I
believe easier to shine to to a high Shine the black shoes are easier you can
make black look great the lighter They are the harder it is to to get a
great shine on it in my opinion so I’d Like to do a nice mirror shine on the
toes you can see these you need a little Bit of attention to we’re gonna do that
we’ve got you know all of our cutroman Mine here I’ve got you know our our
water dispenser I’ve got some cold water From the champagne bucket in here we’ve
got some cream some wax some mirror Gloss some nappa cream you’ve got
actually this is a tin of Berluti shoe Polish and now of course you know
Berluti is private labeling Saphir and You can tell this by smelling it that’s
a great point you know you can smell but This is a great example of really what
was the genesis of the mirror gloss which

Is anyone that has been shining shoes
that new enjoys a mirror shine would Allow their pet deluxe to dry out a
little bit by leaving the tin open and Once the wax cracked it meant that you
know those solvents have evaporated and Had a higher concentration of those hard
waxes so the mirror gloss is really Essentially just this
so you clearly have had this for a while Yeah yeah quite a bit. So we’ve got some chamois Here so this is our high shine chamois
but don’t actually have an interesting Chamois that I think you should share. Yeah I mean I use my sons 100% cotton clothing because
they’re very soft they made for kids to Be very soft very nice and I like to use
this as a chamois yeah this is I’m a Great chamois.
The first parts that I do is I put Some Nappa cream just to nourish do a
light brush before you know we’re Sharing a brush today yes remove any
debris or residue on the shoe Then I apply the Nappa cream with my
hands just because it’s there’s no more And no much solvent in it so it’s not
you know anything that could hurt your Your hands or your skin and allows you to to see where the It’s needed most when it goes
on nicely you know it’s so much thinner It sits in there and it’s it almost
feels like a moisturizer that you would Use for for your skin actually it’s texture is not very different from This what if you think about shoe care I
mean you know it’s skin care is the same Thing as shoe care I mean it’s all I
mean you know leather is a skin yeah Right yeah I mean I don’t know if I put
some Renovateur right after a Shower but maybe some nappa leather balm I mean how much pressure are you Applying are you really kind of working
this in? I almost like a massage You know you want you want this to to
penetrate the the leather so I use as Much pressure I was used like if I was
doing a massage because that’s exactly What I’m doing to my shoes and then of
the smell of the Nappa cream does it you Know I don’t actually don’t use the Nappa enough so I’m happy to be using it today I Mean because I mean it doesn’t have any
waxes but you’re gonna add waxes with Yeah we don’t mean with the green so you
softer words and you know I always tell People on our videos I mean you you know
each of the products that you’re using I Mean you have to think about why you’re
using it what’s the purpose you know What the conditioner it’s the condition
exactly know with the cream polish its Pigment and I finish what I have left on
my on my fingers on the heel nourish

Kind of the heel but that’s my own thing
actually sometimes I would actually use It on their own their own their own the
extra soul oh really yeah it’s like a Soil conditioner yeah I mean now that
they came up with the sole guard I used I prefer using the sole guard because it
just drinks easier it’s a little bit Water resistant which is yeah nice to
have You’re so fast with that Berluti
hunting yeah I mean you know it’s Because I do it on my son a lot of times
you don’t have much time and he’s not The most patient person
but I love to ask him you know what he Wants. Do you want the Persian shoeshine do you Want the Persian knot you want the Berluti or just a regular knot yep so Actually I mean you know it was it was
over dinner at your house that I Actually first learned of the Berluti knot that’s actually we talked about That I like to talk in the laces the
laces so do you remove your laces I do Only when I do a very deep like like you
know when I do the President or the President shoeshine like you’re
having your video I would remove the Laces just because I’m going deep and
I’m going this is just a maintenance Thing so I don’t yeah I mean that’s we
get a lot of the questions in our videos But you know why don’t you remove your
shoelaces and the reality is is lacing Shoes is a pain but they have nothing
against people that know I mean if you Have the time to do it that’s great but
I mean if removing your shoelace is the Time success is the difference between
shining your shoes and not then you’re Better off to just shine your shoes on
your shoelaces and actually the wax is From the polish are good for the laces
it helps condition in wax laces but I do Think it’s actually better to remove
them if you have time because you can You do a better job I think in in yeah
in really going on the tongue and Doing it everywhere but you know you
don’t always have time to Remove the laces it’s great huh
so whenever you’re done do you buff this Off? – I do! – Will you pass the brush please? I do
of course I brush this off if I if I Have a fan handy I will actually put
them in front of the fan for a little Bit so it dries nice and it’s well well
it’s nice and dry all over because Usually when I shine shoes I send more
than one pair at a time so I applied the Nappa let it dry until I applied on a
pound all of them and then I’ll brush All of them and then I apply the cream
on all of them and kind of usually I do Three to four and at the time you know
allows me to really so where do you when

You prefer a shine your shoes do you
have a particular ritual I do so when I Put the kids to sleep then we eat with my
lovely wife and and then and then that’s When I start to shine you know cigar
scotch or just the kitchen table and I You know it is why exactly wine
champagne cigars my wife is not in the Business trip or is not at home I’m not
allowed to smoke when when she’s here That’s why I installed the vent, the smoke filtration system at the Office she was all for that cheers hey
it’s nice to be doing this together yeah Definitely Yeah it’s good here’s the brush if you
need to use that I also check to see first if they
drink well and I mean this is sharkskin I never know, no it’s a stingray.
Unbelievable I mean Olga and she would remove the
upper crust which other the the bumpy Part and the leather is just super calm
in a stacking on the heel is just superb Look at how that seated
then I do a nice brush and actually I Think the nappa does a good job
bringing out the shine of the shoes Sometimes you know if the shoe are well
taken care of and the only thing you Need to revive this shine it’s just a
little Napa cream and you’re done you Know the upper is really well shined I
mean all except for the toe cap yeah That’s the only thing I would touch what
I like use a little bit of wax cream Polish yeah I played the cream polish
also with my hand just I can because I Can feel better where the leather needs
it more the only thing you have to be Careful when doing those is that you
don’t put any cream under your Fingernail yeah you almost need a brush
to scrub your fingernails yeah even this Cream polish is a little drier then oh
yeah I knew and it’s you know it’s Interesting to see again just kind of as
the texture of the polish even of bulbs Kind of as you know the cream polish
when they get it I literally let it dry for maybe a night
really I leave it open for the night and Much much thicker consistency you know
we all have different experience the Only problem was you apply you to clean
with your hands unless you have new Pigment all over your hands but that’s
okay Nothing that the good soap can’t remove
actually keep some sharp stone Work because I often yeah you know end
up with and you know this scream is very Thick it’s actually also really good for
just the edges yeah I’ll use it on the edges from time to time
you know I might try this I’m actually

Whenever I get back to the office I’m
gonna allow some of my cream to dry out Because actually it feels like it goes
on it goes on much thicker yep You probably have a higher concentration
of pigment and it probably I mean if you Really are careful to work it into the
leather probably does a much better job Conditioning you know and also I think
when it’s dry like this it does a better Job waterproofing for the second part
when you hide shine it make sense it’s Got a higher concentration of waxes
right which is doing a waterproofing I Love your brush I mean this long
bristle of just game-changing you know The the large brush is my favorite
because I’m less likely to deem the Shoe because I missed the
distance the wood is not as close done That before I’ve been shining all these
new brush in and this is you know you Right at the end on the final brush is
here at your shoe nothing so what are Some of your favorite shoes you’ve
gotten from Olga I mean tell me a little Bit about that I’m an incredible woman
I’ve never met her I’d love to one day I Mean she’s a legend I mean what she was
doing with shoes in the 70s and 80s was It’s revolutionary her work is
incredible I mean now you know there’s a Lot of people that have copied it but
you know in the context of the time I Mean it was she was one of the
groundbreaking yeah yeah she was one of The first and you know she has such a
passion for you know the well dress that It’s communicative you know and I mean Her and my dad are responsible for my
shoe addiction you know. Now, can you Fit into your father’s shoes?
Thank God I can. You can? Yes I can Because that’s a great collection and
I’m a big lover of vintage shoes and you Know there’s no way to get them anymore
so anyway I just tell them from when He’s at work I would go in his closet
steal whatever I want and hide it in my Bag until he you know found it then he
calls me and like where are those I know It well that’s one of the prime you know
when they’re when they go home and my Brother wants me to do some shine my dad
once wants me to do some shine so when I’m finished with the cream I always
touch to see if it’s dry all over and Then I brush because you get a nice
shine when it says when it’s dry with The cream it’s it’s you know some time
has just stopped right there you know Yeah absolutely I mean I gonna see it’s
it’s who’s gonna give you a better shine In my mind is not as dry so I’m using
blue because I want to keep this Blue-green color so I’m using blue for
for the upper and you’re using black

Straight black so did you apply
the the Navy to this area also Everywhere everywhere and so I you know
I guess it’s a great illustration that You know the pigment is transparent
right so it’s not I mean they’re still Able yeah see on the cream so how you’re
concentrating on those the wax of course It’s too bad I mean you know I I forgot
to order some polish and I want to shine If I use a different color it doesn’t
matter Actually I love using blue for black
shoes or red for black shoes I think he Works there well there’s no question
yeah yeah very well I mean that goes to The experimentation I mean everyone
starts off wanting to follow the rules I Mean we get a lot of questions from
customers about what’s right what’s Wrong but you know the certain point you
graduate I mean you have to learn the Fundamentals you have to learn the rules
but at a certain point you know once you Really understand shoe care you know you
can graduate past that and begin Experimenting I mean red polish on a
pair of black shoes just give us a great Little subtlety or and you know the dark
brown on a pair of light brown shoes I Mean we did a antiquing video I saw it
and you know even I was surprised I mean You know we do these videos and we never
know exactly how the shoes are going to Turned out and I have to say the you
know they were unbelievable that’s That’s the stuff er but I like I light
it on fire to burn all the excess Solvents so there is even less solvent
and in those let it burn I just lied on Fire let it let it so I let in the
middle let it spread and then I blow it And you do that like before you’re
applying it or just whenever you receive It I do well if if I want to
if I have never shined a pair of shoes And new shoes I want to shine I’ll
actually light on fire and use the Liquid wax to actually so it penetrates
better and it’s easier to shine at the End but like this I’m just gonna rub
some and play around so just the I mean Just the cream polish yeah alone having
this job unbelievable corners yeah I Mean I probably actually won’t even
apply a hard wax no you don’t need to You know the rest of this you don’t need
to and I’m gonna do the same thing I’m Just gonna play it on the on the on the
tour and on the on the sides so as you Said on most of your video and it really
makes sense it’s lesson is is more so You don’t want to apply too much polish
the the as little as possible and then I Start with the water
so I Duke I drop a couple of drop on my Chamois and then I you know damp it dry
on the towel so I lose all the excess

Water cuz too much water it screws
everything up and then I start you know Applying and here we’re lucky because we
have the AC round on top of us and it Really helps shiny yeah one of the
tricks that that you can do is you can Actually you can put your shoes in front
of a fan yeah that helped accelerate and Are you using cold water do you find
that cold water I use cold water I that was one of Olga’s methods yeah
you know her shine president buffing the Chamois with cold water because it
hardens the waxes yeah and then that Just play with the works because I
already have water on my chamois so I Just need to add more wax slowly build
up the shine I love this process know Bringing the shine out you know I’m
always surprised I mean even as someone That shines
quite often you know I’m still it’s Always so gratifying nice it is you know
it is how they turn out I mean even Right here and you know actually have
really really pleased with you shine and You know the question is when do you
stop you know when do you stop shining When is it shiny enough enough for me
you know in to me it’s shiny enough when You can read time with your watch
through the thread of the capital so That’s how I recognize there we go if
it’s signing a fee see if I can read Time with my words on the capital I’m
good and I stop I’ve never seen someone Do it yeah I can I can read the time
yeah you’d see often people doing this With their semi is to see how much water
is left on the semi you know tap it on Your on your hand like this yeah you
know I like to take my chamois I’d use It leather shoe shine carpet and now
again now even if I have wax on my Chamois Oh against the shoe shine carpet
because you know you really want to Clean chamois
I mean having some waxes in the fabric Is a good thing as long as it’s not too
much no then it begins to skip it Against the skip and then you won’t
achieve so you know the best way is just To tap it onto the wax you don’t need to
rub it just tap it onto the wax but the Trick is the water point and I think is
the tricky point not too less is more Water exactly and I think the best way
is to apply you know water directly to The semi and and you dump it dry because
then you’re sure it don’t put too much And you need a very absorbent paper to
do this Yeah regular regular cloth paper cloth
so any interesting shoes and the works Any any projects actually yes I have a
centrist panel shows in the work those Are going to be absolutely amazing
they’re gonna be boots green boots it’s

Gonna be American bison green split
though really those are gonna be great You really love your colors it’s a you
keep it interesting I didn’t arrange Heritage of you I love you know and I
think you’re playing around with collar And shoes is is you know one of the best
part of shoes and you know it doesn’t Happen over take over overnight you know
you start by a black and then I had a Ten then I love burgundy shoes I had a
nice burgundy and I think once you have Black brown and burgundy you know then
you can work your way around and kind of Build up your collection finish so very
efficient you know even the shine just On the back quarters I mean how do you
work how do you build that I mean are You building it with the mirror gloss
awesome yeah mirror gloss and the secret I think to go fast it’s to just tap in
the fast, less is more yeah definitely less Especially the mirror gloss I know but
you don’t need a brush and I think the More you wait with the the cream the
easier it is to get a nice shine on it And the more you wait with how long you
let it dry and oh yeah yeah yep one of The things I like to do is I’ll actually
shine shoes at the office and it allows Me to kind of stretch the process out
you know it’s not like if I’m doing it At home I you know I want to complete
whatever it is I started yeah because You want the reward or it’s like you
know you have a finite window and you Know the kids are down yeah it’s like do
the wife’s you know ran to the store or Something honestly with young children I
feel like I don’t get much time to shine No just misspoke to spend the half of
sunday finding shoes my wife mom will Have that anymore so we become very
efficient in our technique well you have To you have to and I think you know the
your gloss is by far the best tool yeah Whenever I travel I’ll just take a
little bit of wax polish and your glass With me
actually I just think the girls are just Mean just think the mirror gloss I
find that the two I mean and then I’ll Always take this little spritzer bottle
I love this because I really love it you Can also use it for ironing because you
never like never want to iron a shirt at A hotel with an iron you don’t know how
it’s been treated because they could Spit you know some that’s rust and nasty
water and you ruin your only white shirt And so I’ll use half an hour after
that’s like you know the morning of your Meeting I also always travel with an
extra pair of shoelaces you know what I Learned that from you
I now anytime I travel I I take some Button for my shirts because you know
you don’t want to lose like the top

Button for that is for the for another
important meeting and I’ll take an extra Pair of shoe shine other shoelaces
insurance policy So have you ever tried any champagne i
well i’m afraid of it i know i’ll God Does it no it’s one of our trick but I’m
I’m afraid of using alcohol under I Don’t know I feel like I’m not
specialists in a fuck you know good Enough harder than I can certainly
relate with the apprehension you know I Think also it’s a question of habit you
know it’s it’s it’s really a habit to Sign your shoes and I think once you
come to your own technique it’s very Hard to change it yeah yeah I mean once
you figure out your own technique I mean It really it is part of the efficiency
exactly Whatever works works beautiful and I
think you’re right on your video is Really the the the hard part is to build
up and I think you know the less is more Sentence is really something you should
always you know remember it’s not Because we’re cheap and we don’t want to
use more more shoe shine it’s just Because it works better if you apply a
small amount well I mean especially with The Saphir it’s such high quality stuff
that you don’t need much honestly it’s Just a matter of getting it on there I
mean you need you know with the mirror Shine I mean you do need a certain level
of saturation of the pores yeah but you Know obviously with the Mirror Goss it’s as
little as two to three coats you know You can work up a really nice shine and
then the more deficient no more patient To your heart your the better shine you
get you know if you have the patience to You know three four five six coats all
right so what I’ve spoken with you know Various kind of patina people you know
the the number of layers is what kind of Creates the depth yeah right so I mean
you can get a nice mirror shine in two Or three coats but it’s never gonna come
close you know to the depth of a mirror Shine that you spent you know two days
and a hundred coats of Polish on And actually you know what doing the
moonshine actually saved some of my Shoes because you know it creates a
protective layers so if you scratch them Or if you should bang them right on the
on the cap on the toy you pissed off Because you just screwed your mirror
shine but you didn’t you didn’t do Anything you just you know only the
layer that was that was that you put on It is needs to be removing changed but
that’s it do you think it does anything For the waterproofing and doing your
layer like this now there’s no question I mean you know the hard waxes and the
wax polish actually are a better

Waterproofing agent than what you would
use certainly safer for the leather than What you would get out of a you know
like a supernova in most shoes I mean Honestly let’s be honest dress shoes and
then you’d be crazy to wear a nice pair Of dress shoes in a downpour so you just
need to light waterproofing so that if It’s a drizzle or you know a splash of
water or something that it doesn’t wore You know you’re in the restaurant and
someone drop something on you which Happened to me couple times
things happens shoes children I mean It’s like yeah there’s always something
to ruin a beautiful pair of shoes I call it defensive walking or even you
know the subway or in the city you have To be I’m sure super careful yeah I mean
you know you spend you know 30 minutes Shining your shoes just put them on and
and you just scratch them on Something or like somewhere I walk on
you or it starts raining on you or Anything like this so now I carry you
know the shoe protective thing that you Sell so everything that’s that stuff is
great you know First living in the city I could totally
understand always having a pair of Watch oh nice I’m gonna see it oh yes
you did old enough less yours in mind I Think you’re pretty close pretty close We’re done oh you know it’s a you know I
I call it the Mirage of a mirror shine I Mean you really have to be careful
we’s a suit yeah well certainly with This suit white shirts oh good yeah but
you’ve got to be careful from like Falling into your shelling and you know
you could get stuck yeah you know and You know in one wrong step will screw up
all the hard work you know if you put Too much your gloves on the head or if
you put too much water if you put you Know any wrong step at this stage was
ruin up the whole work you put into it Yeah I make myself you know put my shoes
on the floor and kind of stand up and Look at that because you know you know
if I’m looking at them like this I’m Like well I still need you know more
work but it’s important to keep things In perspective yeah I keep things in
perspective and also we I’ve heard a lot Of people were using stockings to finish
up what’s your take on this you know I Mean they work but it’s not gonna
produce this level of nourishment you Know but for taking a stocking on the
entire shoe and you know yeah I mean it Just you know again it’s the friction
and so it just helps increase the Friction so what do you think of a
author’s old clothing I think I’ve got Something to look forward to as Nicholas
begins to grow out of this is you know

Petite but it’s about do you know I
think we’ve got some reverse this is Actually it’s a great fabric so right
coming soon to the Hanger Project a new Line of chamois yeah Alex hey thank you

mean we would our shoes with a never be Without a shine I think we’d do that
every week you know ten o’clock on Sunday head to Alex’s and it’d made an excuse for my wife no I’m sorry I’m hanging out With Kirby it could be worse okay
there’s much much less benign ways to Spend time true you know the only
problem with shoe shine is your hands or A little new colored afterwards and you
know it’s a great of hard work and you Know if you put it on your on your
